The history of Thomas & Friends:
It is produced on the bases of The Railway Series whose writer is Reverend W. V. Awdry. These books deal with the adventures of a group of Human trains and road vehicles who live on the fictional Island of Sodor. The books were based on stories Awdry told to entertain his son Christopher during the little boy’s recovery from measles. Many of the stories are based on events of Awdry’s personal experience. In the 1980s, the TV rights of the story were sold to Britt Allcroft, therefore it began its production of television series, and premiered in 1984. By the end of 2011, a total of 15 broadcast season, 368-episode TV series have been presented. In 2012, it will broadcast the 16th quarter with a total of 20 sets. In 2000, Britt Allcroft left the Britt Allcroft Company which is co-created with her husband. And then Britt Allcroft renamed Gullane Entertainment, which also owns the Guinness Book of World Records and other famous brands at the sametime. In 2003, Thomas and Friends series, which belongs to Gullane Entertainment was sold to Hit Entertainment. October 2011, the U.S. toy company Mattel, which has Barbie dolls and other many international well-known toy brands, acquired Hit Entertainment.
Thomas and Friends Series locomotive toys are: Track Master series developed by Fisher-Price (Mattel), Take-n-Play series, Preschool Series, TOMY’s Plarail series, and Learning Curve’s (formerly belongs to RC2 Group, later acquired by TOMY) Wooden Railway series. Each company produced toys (Thomas and Friends series) with its own characteristics, bringing appropriate product for different age groups. For example, Preschool series of Fisher-Price are developed for infants and young children. TOMY’s Plarail series has electric tracks, therefore players can design the appropriate combination of scenes, which would make the reproduction of animation scenes, producing the immersive feeling of being personally on the scene; while Learning Curve’s Wooden Railway Series is made of wood material, with more security in the use.
